Anchorage is a shady, park town which is well known for its unique characteristics that have been well preserved over the years. Some distinct characteristics of Anchorage include stone bridges and triangle intersections which are features similar to the Olmsted Park system.

A man named Edward Dorsey Hobbs was one of the first developers of Anchorage; he even drew one of the first maps of the town. In 1849, Hobbs was a prominent figure in establishing the Louisville and Frankfort Railroad through Anchorage which encouraged the growth of the area.

Anchorage was incorporated in 1878, after the death of James W. Goslee, who called his estate The Anchorage. Goslee hung the anchor of his ship, the Matamora, on the rim of the locomotive wheel which was located at the center of town. This was a symbol of how significant the river and railroad were to the establishment of the town of Anchorage.

Anchorage, Kentucky has a reputation for housing some of the areas wealthiest residents.   In the late 1800’s most citizens in Anchorage lived on large, elaborate estates, but as the twentieth century progressed many of the estates divided into smaller plots of land and upscale homes began to be built.
