Anchorage was incorporated in 1878, after the death of James W. Goslee, who called his estate The Anchorage. Goslee hung the anchor of his ship, the Matamora, on the rim of the locomotive wheel which was located at the center of town. This was a symbol of how significant the river and railroad were to the establishment of the town of Anchorage.
