During its rural years, Fern Creek was known as Stringtown, due to it being strung -out along the Louisville-Bardstown Pike. While it was rural for many years, the arrival of nearby General Electric’s Appliance Park resulted in significant growth for the community. Another reason for the growth of Fern Creek came way in 1987 when the Gene Snyder freeway reached completion, as a result, shopping centers, businesses and Fern Creek real estate began sprouting rapidly.
Fern Creek is known in the city of Louisville for offering a variety of recently developed communities. Examples of these new neighborhoods include Windgate Meadows, Oakland Hills, Little Spring Farm and Cedar Meadow. These subdivisions have been developed within the last five years and are still in the process of building new real estate. This is an example of why much of the new growth in Jefferson County has been happening in the Fern Creek area; because these newly developing communities and the availability of reasonably priced land. In other areas of Louisville undeveloped land is scarce; therefore Fern Creek is very popular for buyers looking to build a custom, new construction home.
Some of Fern Creek’s original neighborhoods, developed in the 1970’s and 80’s, include Idlewood, Stone Bluff, Waterfern Heights and Hillsborough. These homes are mostly built in the style of Bi-Level, Tri-Level and Ranch.
In recent years, the area around Bardstown Road and the Gene Snyder Freeway has experienced considerable retail and restaurant growth. Popular restaurants in Fern Creek include Sake Blue, Uno Chicago Bar & Grill, Hungry Pelican,Aspen Creek and Outback Steakhouse. Highview Park, McNeely Lake Park andFern Creek Park are three great parks in Fern Creek. Fern Creek Park is a 30 acre park which houses many ball fields, hiking trails, a playground and tennis courts. Schools in Fern Creek include Bates Elementary School, Whitefield Academy, Fern Creek Elementary, Fern Creek High School and Moore Traditional High School.
