Located about 3 miles southeast of downtown Louisville, Germantown started as small farms and butcher shops in the 1870’s. Its name deriving from the German Catholics that settled the area, the neighborhood grew around the large Catholic churches they built. Split into subdivisions in the 1890’s, the city of Germantown went through a huge economic boom as it became increasingly developed-eventually becoming the largest collection of shotgun houses in the city.

Popular housing styles for the area consists of two bedroom shotguns and, camel backs. The Germantown subdivisions wind around and most connect. Small parks and community gardens are common to see for this close-knit, family friendly neighborhood. With its convenient location, Germantown provides a less expensive option that is great for first time homebuyers.
