Located about 3 miles southeast of downtown Louisville, Germantown started as small farms and butcher shops in the 1870’s. Its name deriving from the German Catholics that settled the area, the neighborhood grew around the large Catholic churches they built. Split into subdivisions in the 1890’s, the city of Germantown went through a huge economic boom as it became increasingly developed-eventually becoming the largest collection of shotgun houses in the city.
